Built from the backcountry
Geospatial infrastructure is fragmented. I found that out trying to answer terrain questions for backcountry skiing and rock climbing. The tools are there but they don't talk to each other, results are hard to reproduce, and there's no way to inspect what happened. folia is the stack I wished existed.
Cloud-native data systems
10+ years building data infrastructure: ETL pipelines, real-time systems, cloud architecture. Now applying those patterns to geospatial. The ecosystem (COG, PMTiles, STAC, GeoParquet) has matured to where a small team can build what used to require an enterprise GIS department.
Zero friction, zero lock-in
folia is built on four principles:
- Declarative over imperative. Define what you want, not how.
- Local-first, cloud-scalable. Same workflow everywhere.
- Provenance is first-class. Every result traces to source.
- AI-native. Built for agents, not just analysts.
Let's build together
If you're working on hard geospatial problems, or frustrated by the tools that exist today, I'd love to hear from you. folia is early, and the best products are shaped by real users with real problems.
