About

The story behind folia and the person building it.

Nate Hearns
Builder

Data engineer and chronic tinkerer. Building tools that bridge the gap between raw geospatial data and the people who need it.

Built from the backcountry

I set out to build a simple map for outdoor navigation — and realized there's no unified, cloud-native way to go from raw data to finished map. The GIS world is fragmented: powerful tools that don't talk to each other, formats that don't play nice, infrastructure that fights you at every step. folia is about building maps at the speed of thought.

From enterprise to indie

I spent years building cloud-native data systems — first at Deloitte consulting for Fortune 500s, then leading data infrastructure at Tulip Interfaces.

Now I'm applying those lessons to geospatial. The cloud-native geo ecosystem (COG, PMTiles, STAC, GeoParquet) has matured to the point where a small team can build what used to require an enterprise GIS department. folia is my bet on that future.

Peak human experience

"Grow the ecosystem while conserving resources — being efficient and promoting knowledge sharing."

I believe the best tools get out of the way. They don't lock you in. They don't make you copy data you don't need to copy. They don't charge you for compute you can't estimate upfront.

folia is built on that principle: federated by default, eject at any layer, open source at the core. I want to help people spend less time fighting infrastructure and more time in the mountains, the forests, the places that matter.

Let's build together

If you're working on geospatial problems — whether that's earth observation, outdoor recreation, conservation, urban planning — I'd love to hear from you. folia is early, and the best products are shaped by real users with real problems.
